Bony Babies
You know, my dad hates rawhide bones and pizzles and bully sticks (we hear they are actually cow penises, is that true?). No pig's ears for us. And it really doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he is a vegetarian. He just thinks they are messy and gross and bad for our stomachs and sometimes they can lead to aggressive behavior when we become too possessive of them. Pretty much all the things we love about them.
That's why we were surprised when dad brought a Bony Baby home to us. It looks like a very cute stuffed toy, but it's so much more than that. You see these ingenious folks came up with the idea of cramming a rawhide bone inside of a loosely constructed stuffed toy. It is created just so we can tear it up and get to the good stuff inside. Although Dad only lets us chew on the bone for very limited times before he puts it up.
He brought us Oscar the Dog, but there is also a Trixie the Cat Bony Baby and a Osama Bone Laden Bony Baby. Click here to order your very own Bony Baby.Tuesday, September 13, 2011
How to Lower Your Vet Bill

Advances in veterinary medicine mean more extensive, and expensive, treatments are available for animals, but even ordinary costs such as flea and tick protection can add up quickly. Here are some ways to curb those costs while still giving your pet the best of care.

When Life Gives You Lemons...
When LIfe Gives You Lemons, Make Lemon PastaThis is one of our favorite pastas at Deep Acres Farm. So easy and so delicious.
Lemon Pasta
1 lb spaghetti
3 tblsp. kosher or sea salt
4 lemons
1/2 cup good parmesan
6 tblsp. olive oil
4 tblsp. butter
Zest and juice 2 lemons and set aside in a small bowl.
Carve the meat out of two additional lemons removing any pith and seams and place in a separate small bowl.
Combine olive oil, butter and lemon juice/zest mixture in a pan and heat just until the butter melts. Remove from heat.
In the meantime, cook spaghetti noodles. I use Barilla's whole wheat spaghetti. Cook in a pan of boiling water with 3 tablespoons of salt for 7 minutes.
Drain pasta, but first collect 1/2 cup of pasta water. Return drained pasta to its pan and add prepared lemon sauce and 1/4 cup of pasta water. Cook under medium heat until sauce coats pasta.
Transfer spaghetti to a large bowl and add lemon meat and parmesan and mix thoroughly. Add additional pasta water if needed to coat the pasta.
(Note: You may add lightly cooked peas or green beans if you like, but we like this pasta naked).
Serve with additional grated parmesan on the side.
YUM!
